Henderson Paddle, Gairloch

David, Susan and Erynn came out with me again today for another great session a year on from the last. David didn’t get on too well with the sitting position of the kayak last time so he jumped in the front of a canoe with me whist Susan and Erynn paddled themselves around in kayaks.

Harrower Kayak, Gairloch

Gavin, Morven, Angus, Ailsa and Isla are were in the area again so couldn’t resist coming out for another session with me. We had nicer weather this year and nobody swam accidentally this time!

Holmes Kayak, Gairloch

Neil had recently bought a kayak and wanted to refresh his skills and get it paddling well. We spent a good amount of time chatting about kit so that he’ll be able to keep himself safe when he’s out on the water. By the end of the session he was getting his kayak to go where he wanted it to, not so easy with a boat that wants to spin like a roundabout!

I had been due to be paddling with Neil the day before but had to cancel as I was out on the hill with the MR team, so thanks Neil for being flexible and able to slot into the next day.

When Neil’s in the area he spends most of his time down at the harbour manning the Glendale boat hire office, you can hire small motor boats to explore the area.

Walls Kayak, Gairloch

Brothers Ken and John came for a paddle this afternoon. We had a relaxing paddle around the craggy coastline to a little beach for a brew before heading back to the slip way.

Bowman Canoe, Gairloch

Richard, Kelly and Cale met me today in Gairloch along with their friends in their own kayaks, Jacqui and Gary. The sun was out for most of the time as we paddled around the coastline searching for urchins, star fish and seals.

Stewart Kayak, Shieldaig

Alistair, Shona, Alice and Peter joined me for a damp morning on the water. Despite the rain and midges we had a great morning. I assessed Peter on his Cubs paddle sports stage 1 badge, obviously he passed perfectly. I’m sure if there was a Guide badge for Alice she’d have passed too.

Gooedbloed Kayak, Gairloch

The fantastic sunshine continued into the afternoon as sisters Corinne, Winnie and Lia joined me. We had a relaxing paddle whilst basking in the heat of the summers day. It was even nice enough for a bit of swimming from our brew break beach!

Cline Kayak, Gairloch

Jon, Lesley, Erin and Eilidh came for a paddle with me on a beautifully sunny day. Jon brought his own boat with him as he’s getting into sea kayaking. It was probably the nicest day so far this year – hot and wind free, lovely paddling conditions!

Davidson Kayak, Gairloch

Kerry and Alan met me in the glorious sunshine for a good time on the water. We were able to relax as we paddled around the coastline in search of sea life. The seals kept watching us as we looked for star fish, sadly this trip we didn’t get a great view of a star fish (one was sat below us but well hidden at one point) but we did see plenty of urchins and seals.

Dixon Kayak, Gairloch

Claire and Olivia met me on a sunny Wednesday morning for a fun session paddling. We had a great time learning how to paddle the kayaks and seeing the sights whilst playing games. The seals made their normal appearance to watch us as we watched them.

Magee Kayak, Gairloch

Alastair and Max joined me in Gairloch for a kayaking session. Max paddles a bit in Toronto each year and Alastair hasn’t paddled since he was about Max’s age, it didn’t take long for Alastair to pick it up again.

Hopefully Alastair has been inspired to get out kayaking again so he can have some great trips with his son back in Canada

Walls Kayak, Gairloch

Louisa, Alastair, Phoebe and Sandy came to Gairloch for a paddling session with me. They stayed just along the road from me at Shore Croft in Mellon Charles and I’d have liked to get out on the water from Mellon Charles but unfortunately the wind direction and speed just weren’t going to let that happen.

Gairloch harbour is a great place to paddle from, so we all had a great time anyway.

Singh Kayak, Gairloch

Pratibha, Prasoon, Pratyush and Pranayi joined me for a fun session. The breeze that had been around in the morning luckily relaxed a little, giving us a nicer session. We had a great time playing games and seeing the wildlife as we paddled around. Those curious seals making their normal appearance by the harbour!

Burn Kayak, Poolewe

Harry and Gill met me for another session paddling today. They’ve decided to buy themselves some sit on top kayaks, so being sensible folk they wanted to come out with me to learn and practice some self rescue techniques in case either of them falls in. It was a breezy morning so we spent the first part of the session staying dry by improving our paddling strokes.

Over our brew break we chatted about sensible kit to carry to make paddling safer and more enjoyable. After the brew break there was nothing to do but get wet, practising getting back onto their kayaks with no help and also ways to help each other onto a kayak from the water.

Thomson Kayak, Gairloch

Christina, Mark, Jon, Olivia and Terri all joined me for a nice afternoon paddling from Gairloch harbour. We took a selection of sit on top kayaks and sea kayaks to suit everyone’s choices. After a short time spent learning to control the boats we headed off around the craggy coastline to see what we could find.

Davis Kayak, Gairloch

Scott, Joy, Alice and Ella joined me at Gairloch harbour for a fun time on the water. The sun might not have been out as much as I’d like but it was a lovely calm day on the water for us.

Cumming Kayak, Gairloch

Iain, Maureen, Eòin and Anndra have recently got themselves some fancy sit on top kayaks. They have been getting out in them a bit lately but wanted to join me for a session so they could practice some self rescue skills and chat about essential safety kit to carry as they head out by themselves.

I made sure I wore my drysuit for this session as I had no plans of getting cold whilst demonstrating things!
